The majority of the Cuban population uses pits and latrines for the evacuation of waste, which represents approximately 61.8% coverage. This situation makes the sanitation service more complex as the trenches depend on the use of trucks that clean trenches of different brands and models, with high consumption of imported fuel, accessories and spare parts. Approximately 17.49% do not have sanitation coverage, mostly representative of the most remote rural areas. To undertake mechanized unblocking, there is a fleet of 67 high pressure trucks (CAP) of different brands and models, with a technical availability coefficient of 69%.

Of the total volume of waste discharged through sewage systems, pits and latrines (330,039 cubic hectometres), only 37.26% (122,967 cubic hectometres) receives treatment before disposal. In urban areas the presence of septic tanks is predominant for the disposal of waste as primary (previous) treatment before its disposal to the environment. These bodies are a frequent cause of waste dumping due to (lack of maintenance and incorrect operation by the owner entities or clients). Its figure reaches 887,128 throughout the country, of which 110,069 (12%) present an unfavorable state, of which 26,655 graves are in critical condition, which require cleaning on several occasions.
